Tips for Finding Pet Friendly Rentals
If you’re deadset on renting and don’t want to become a homeowner, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of securing pet friendly accommodation.
First of all, having excellent previous rental history is the best first step. If you’ve proven you’re a great tenant (and your pet is as well) then you’ve already got one foot in the door. A reference letter or something similar from a previous property manager is the best way to prove this.
Sometimes, you can offer to increase your bond to sweeten the deal for your landlord. However, with the vacancy rate for rentals being at critical levels, especially in the capital cities, many property managers are demanding 6-12 months’ rent upfront. Which means adding $50-$100 to your bond won’t be as effective as it used to be.
Another great option, for some pets, is a meet and greet with your property manager or landlord. Rather than trying to convince them yourself, letting your pet do all the talking (or playing) will probably give the best result. This naturally works best with dogs, and probably isn’t a great idea if you have a pet snake or rat.
