From Multiple Debts & Only $1000 to 3 Properties in 5 Years: Iteh’s Story
When she came to Darren, Iteh wasn't working full time, only had $1000, and had debts on top of it all. But she knew that homeownership was what she wanted for her family. In this week's episode of Keys to Freedom, Darren sits down with Iteh to discuss how she and her partner were able to overcome the odds and get into their first home, without the big deposit. As well as the steps they've taken since then to grow their property portfolio with investments across Australia.
Iteh’s story is one of determination and breaking long-standing patterns. At just 32 years old, she and her partner now own nearly $1.4 million worth of property, having built over $400,000 in equity within just a few years. But their life didn’t always look this way. Not long ago, they were renters without savings, carrying debt, and believing homeownership was something out of reach.
Growing up in Wellington, New Zealand, Iteh watched her parents work hard but never own a home. Renting wasn’t seen as temporary in her family—it was simply how life worked. Even after moving to Australia, she believed the same would be true for her own children.
“My parents never owned property, renting was just what we knew.”

Determined to change that, Iteh and her partner approached banks for help. Time after time, they were turned away. Instead of being shown solutions, they were told why they didn’t qualify, leaving them feeling stuck and defeated. Every rejection made the dream feel even further away.

One day, scrolling through Facebook, Iteh saw Darren Walters and the no or low deposit system at No1 Property Guide. Curious but doubtful, she reached out. That single moment changed their future completely.
With just $1,000 upfront and around $1,000 in legal fees, Iteh and her partner stepped onto the property ladder. Their first home, built in 2018 for $412,000, is now valued at around $700,000—nearly a $300,000 gain from their first step alone. What once felt impossible had become a reality.
But they didn’t stop there. Using the knowledge and confidence they’d gained, Iteh and her partner started building their second property—an investment home in Townsville. Before construction even finished, the land alone had increased in value by more than $100,000.

“From $1,000 in… we now own two properties worth $1.4 million. And we’ve just started our third. Everything we’re building is for our kids.”

For Iteh, this journey isn’t about chasing wealth. It’s about building a different future for their family—a future she never saw growing up. Each step forward is about creating stability and opportunities for her children that she didn’t have herself.
Every property they’ve secured represents more than just bricks and land—it’s a step towards breaking a generational cycle. What once seemed like a distant dream has become part of their family’s everyday reality. For Iteh, the real reward is knowing her children will grow up seeing homeownership as normal, not the exception.
“It’s about building that future we didn’t have... to set up our kids. That’s what keeps us going.”

Darren helped her see just how much they’d changed their circumstances. In just a few years, they went from paying rent to being landlords themselves. While others now rent their investment property, Iteh’s family is growing their equity and planning for even more. What once felt complicated became achievable, and Iteh felt empowered to keep moving forward.
From renting to owning two homes and planning a third. With over $400,000 in equity built along the way, Iteh’s story proves that the right help and the right decision can change everything. Her advice is simple.
“Just get in. Don’t sit on the fence. Just take that first step.”
